Job Description:
A Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) is a healthcare professional who specializes in providing care to elderly patients, primarily in long-term care settings such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and home care environments. GNAs focus on the unique needs of aging adults, offering compassionate and personalized support to enhance their quality of life. Working under the supervision of registered nurses or licensed practical nurses, GNAs play a crucial role in the care team by ensuring the comfort, safety, and emotional well-being of elderly patients. Their expertise is essential in creating a supportive and dignified environment for older adults.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist elderly patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and feeding.
- Help with mobility and transfers, ensuring patient safety when moving from one position to another.
- Monitor and document patients’ vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
- Offer emotional support and companionship to elderly patients, ensuring their mental well-being.
- Assist with incontinence care, toileting, and other personal hygiene needs.
- Help patients with range-of-motion exercises to promote physical health and prevent complications.
- Maintain a clean and safe living environment for patients.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop and implement patient care plans.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must complete a state-approved GNA training program, which includes both classroom education and hands-on clinical experience.
- Must pass the Maryland GNA competency exam to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in providing care to elderly patients.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check
